The point about partisanship is certainly part of what Marcus was saying. But his indignation at the notion that we’re supposed to associate the Lincolnite Republican war-hawk neocon centralizer with the Confederacy
(which was, what, dovish and decentralized? Ho ho ho) makes me think that something more is being said here.
In any case, whatever points Marcus did or did not intend to make, the passage he quotes from Webb is obviously a farrago of half-truths and red herrings, and a despicable instance of counterhistorical fudging. It’s regrettable that Marcus did not point this out in a post ostensibly about the dangers of propaganda and historical ignorance.
