Shameless Self-promotion Sunday, Libertopian edition
Here's a pretty old post from the blog archives of Geekery Today; it was written about 12 years ago, in 2012, on the World Wide Web.
It’s a beautiful Autumn Sunday. What better time for Shamelessness?
This week for me has mostly been about cleaning up, taking stock, and making plans. When I haven’t just been sitting outside trying to get as much reading done in the fall weather as I can. But to-day I do have some major Shamelessness of my own to lay down, which is that I can confirm that, come October, I’ll be appearing on three panels at Libertopia in San Diego, California, including a break-out session (which we are calling Ask an Anti-Capitalist!
) and two panels, one on IP and one on Markets Not Capitalism. While there I’ll be hanging out with as much of the left-libertarian posse as I can, and will also be doing some tabling for Markets Not Capitalism, the ALL Distro, and C4SS in the exhibition space.

The pieces of The Mutualist #2 are finally, finally, finally coming together, and I think they may be worth the wait. “Proudhon, Women and the ‘Organ of Justice’” sets up a reading of the “Catechism of Marriage” and “Amant, Mari ou Avare” plays a bit with the strangely sexual language Proudhon sometimes used in his property theory, setting up a lot of the preliminaries for an essay on “the theory of the subject” lurking in the background of the “gift economy of property” writings. And I’ve been working fairly steadily on fiction translations, including more of Jean Grave’s “Adventures of Nono,” some Han Ryner stories, and a short “utopia” of sorts by Paris communard Paschal Grousset.
I’ve converted the latest AFAQ to epub so I can read it on the go and am working my way through that, trying to get a grip on social anarchist views and economic theory. At the same time I’m trying to get to grips with Shawn’s translations and writings, looking into his take on mutualism and Proudhon’s ideas.
I’ve also started preparring to get bloging – I have a few ideas germinating about anarchism in every day life and about he distortions hierarchy introduces into relationships and how they’re visible in our lives, in particular how some of the calls for Software Professionalism is trying to offset the distortions of hierarchy. And another on ‘macho’ behaviour in the union movement, and how it works against a united working class (and stemming from that a rant about the abuse of the term ‘middle class’).
Won’t have much time for the next couple of weeks though with some friends coming to visit from the US.
