Comments on the bailout:
There are good reasons for taking money out of circulation and burning it in a pit. If inflation was really excessive like as in Zimbabwe, you just might want to do that. But the current recession is being caused by lack of money supply, not an excess of it. The original bailout proposal was a bad idea because it essentially that’s it amounted to, but at least I understood what they were trying to do. Now that the bailout money isn’t going to be used to purchase bad mortgages, it seems like the point is simply to give out money to corporations arbitrarily. I’m not saying the bailout won’t work, but there’s no guarantee that the corporations that are getting the money will use it to turn a profit instead of hording it or subsisting off of it. Also, there’s no reason they have to raise taxes to cover the cost of the bailout, but if they don’t, it will just drive prices up artificially in the long run and make the recession worse.
It’s nothing I can link to, but I’m currently having a bit of a dialogue about left-libertarianism in e-mail with a friend.
I rarely post such stuff in public because I get frustrated with those who disagree with me too easily, which leads to my ability to argue logically falling through the floor, and then I worry that I’ve just set things back a bit rather than moving them forward.
I wrote about how Medieval English law screwed the masses to benefit the aristocracy, summarizing part of chapter 3 of one of my new favorite political/economic books, The Enterprise of Law by Bruce Benson.
Was a slow week for me, but managed to write: Taxation Really Is Theft
I came up with a nifty Obama-related slogan: Forty-Four and No More!. That would be 44 presidents.
Also, NJ ALL is meeting on the 17th.
I translated a public call issued by an anarcho-syndicalist group in Slovakia and the Czech Republic for organization against forcing ordinary people here to pay for the corporate bailouts underway: We don’t intend to pay for the crisis!
It remains to be seen if this initiative leads to anything more than attempts to draw more eyeballs to their website.
