Shameless Self-promotion Sunday #56
Here's a pretty old post from the blog archives of Geekery Today; it was written about 15 years ago, in 2009, on the World Wide Web.
It’s Sunday Shameless Sunday.
What have you been up to this week? Write anything? Leave a link and a short description for your post in the comments. Or fire away about anything else you might want to talk about.

I’ve been responding earnestly to the debate about the apt employment of “socialism” over at C4SS.

Hi Charles,
Did you get my very very very important email? I don’t wish to discuss or divulge the contents on here. I was just curious about whether you’ve even gotten it or not. It means a great deal to me.

For always in thine eyes, O Liberty! Shines that high light whereby the world is saved; And though thou slay us, we will trust in thee.
~ John Hay
This is found at the beginning of Ben Tucker’s major work.

I used to write off this quote as anarcho-suicide worship. My new take is that it encourages us to live in liberty with all the attendant risks ~ with the truth of liberty living on after our deaths.

Hey y’all’s,
I wrote this today:
Whoop de fucking do
The drug war comes to cigs. Thank “goodness” the government is there to “protect” us against our own choices through jail time! God forbid anyone experience more nicotine than the government deems good for you.
Two types of cigs are now in the same legal category as pot. I’ll be waiting for opponents of the drug war to speak up.
Principle! People! Principle

Of course, there are phony opponents of the drug war who don’t oppose it on principle. They just think the government has the wrong target.
Such people are untrustworthy political allies ~ even if they are decent people overall.
I will smuggle you a banned cig with your preferred amount of nicotine out of frustration with this.
Me Facebook status update: Between “liberal” politicians wanting to control your material choices and conservatives wanting to ban abortion; there will be no freedom left in America
Me comment below:
Many leftists and Progressives have been horrible on cigs. They toed the smoking ban line instead of seeing the dangerous precedent being set. The Libertarians win this one.
Tobacco company executives may be unsavory, but that doesn’t mean an objective crime has been committed. If they are guilty of fraud, then they are criminals. They are not criminals for selling recreational drugs with adverse health consequences to willing consumers.

Oops! It posted too soon.
Later on; this was my status update: You can always count on the Reason folks to oppose infringements of commercial freedom with gusto. I much prefer their commentary here to mainstream “liberal” writing celebrating anything anti-corporate. This is not primarily about the corporate business form. This is about individual rights.
I had posted this article: http://www.reason.com/news/show/134255.html
My comment on that update was this:
This is not to say that the corporate business form doesn’t enter the discussion at any point. My point is that these restrictions do not apply only to large tobacco corporations. They also restrict the freedom of smaller businesses and basement cig makers.
BAM. Between this and my recent unreleased essays, I am back in intellectual business baby. Cite me! And link me to your heart’s content folks. I have other sources of income, but I won’t say no to your donation ( :
