Shameless Self-promotion Sunday

Here's a pretty old post from the blog archives of Geekery Today; it was written about 16 years ago, in 2008, on the World Wide Web.

It’s Sunday. I’m cleaning up around the house, trying to get back to work on a software project, and getting ready to visit Detroit and Philadelphia over the holidays.

What have you been up to in the past week? Write anything? Leave a link and a short description for your post in the comments. Or fire away about anything else you might want to talk about.

I LOL’d at that, Nick. Couldn’t believe it was real…

I explained some basic economics to Statist noobs: scarcity and shortages are not the same thing.

    from Nick’s article:

“Millions of Iraqis or rather millions of the people of the world wish to do what Muntadhar did,” Uday al-Zeidi, Mundathar’s brother, said on Monday.

“Thank God he had the guts to do it and avenge the Iraqi people and the country from those who plunder it and have killed its people.”

Amen. I’d like to throw a whole lot more than shoes at Bush. Heavy things. Pointy things. With serrated barbs dipped in foul substances.

“The throwing of the shoes at Mr Bush may turn out to have marked a crucial turning point in the five-and-a-half-year-old American occupation of Iraq, provoking an outpouring of nationalist sentiment in opposition to the US presence, with support for Mr Zaidi seeming to cross sectarian boundaries. Demonstrations backing the journalist were held in the Shia holy city of Najaf, but also in the Sunni city of Tikrit demanding his release.”

George Bush brings sectarian violence to an end! Iraqis unite in their hatred of him ( :

His politics aren’t really medieval either:

“Those experiences helped mold a deep resentment of both the U.S. military’s presence here and Iran’s pervasive influence over Iraq’s cleric-dominated Shiite community, according to his family.

“He hates the American physical occupation as much as he hates the Iranian moral occupation,” Dhirgham said, alluding to the influence of pro-Iranian Shiite clerics in political and social life. “As for Iran, he considers the regime to be the other side of the American coin.”

That’s a view widely held among Iraqis — including many Shiites — who believe the Americans and the Iranians have been fighting a proxy war in their country through Tehran’s alleged links to Shiite extremists.”

Yep. The Iranian regime needs a shoe thrown at it too.

I am sure there are God fearing conservatives somewhere claiming this proves how all Iraqis are savages who don’t respect their civilized liberators…

Except for the theocratic politicians who took advantage of the occupation to come to power. Those are the good pro-America Iraqis!

    USA! USA! USA!

    • I used to visit a forum called the American Conservative where a paleotype stated he’d take 25 million dead Iraqis over 1 dead U.S. soldier. A Vietnam veteran who was clearly repressed also said Vietnam should have been turned into a glass house. American conservatives are astute intellectuals. Obviously.

My wife and I hosted a Christmas party that has, I hope (this is the tenth time it’s taken place), become an annual tradition for some people. I ate too much, and talked a lot, and thought intermittently about the issues that seem to be preoccupying me as a blogger, which have lately included the meaning of “left” in left libertarian, the definition of “socialism,” and the significance of the “new classical natural law theory” for market anarchism.
