Siege Mentality vs. Empirical Reality (Sin Fronteras Edition): In spite of the constant shrill efforts by Anglo nationalists to cultivate a siege mentality, there actually is no empirical evidence of an immigrant crime wave. When you control for age and state of residence, and when you don't count bogus victimless "offenses" which are directly related to immigration status, young Latin@ men are no more likely to commit violent crimes than young white men. If the undocumented population is significantly undercounted by the census (as many, including the nativist fear-mongers, would generally believe it to be), then the Latin@ crime rate is actually significantly lower than the white crime rate. The American Conservative, of all places (!), has the story. (Via the November Coalition.) (Linked Tuesday 2010-03-02.)

Found a thread where a guy wants reasons to support his gut-statism and liberal democrats respond:

    http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3275540

It’s kind of funny how most of the replies are something like “Voluntary income tax won’t work because nobody would pay it”. Yet, the goodness and efficacy of government are never questioned.

    From the thread:

I cannot think of any examples of a completly voluntary society but you can head over to E/N and check out all the bad room mate threads for any number examples of people getting away without paying their fair share.

Thereby demonstrating that a freed market in roommates can never succeed in the real world? Let’s nationalize rental arrangements!

There does seem to be a powerful feeling of entitlement people have. Voluntary taxation would prevent people “paying their fair share”, “helping the community”, etc. I wonder if there is any amount of government foolishness or waste that would persuade some individuals that taxation is wasted money.
