Shameless Self-promotion Sunday

Here's a pretty old post from the blog archives of Geekery Today; it was written about 15 years ago, in 2009, on the World Wide Web.

So, it’s Sunday. The news from northwest Aztlan is that, unlike many a Sunday, I’m not in Vegas — we’ve been in Texas most of the week, and were planning to be back in Vegas last night. Instead, we got stopped in Flagstaff, Arizona by snow in the mountains. We’re hoping to make it through the mountains and back to Vegas in time for a late lunch.

But in the meantime, neither rain, nor sleet, nor snowed-over mountain passes will stop the Shamelessness.

And you? What have you been up to this week? Write anything? Leave a link and a short description for your post in the comments. Or fire away about anything else you might want to talk about.

I’ve been in the UK for the past 18 days, staying at various places with anarchist friends, WWOOFing for a week, and then working on a bike project (but actually, mostly learning from experienced bike mechanics) for a demonstration in Copenhagen. I needed a place to stay, designing wasn’t really my thing, so it felt awkward.

I learned that back in Calais, France, my mom had been sentenced to a 2000!!!@@e2;201a;ac; fine for saying on the internet, about a state official, that he had chosen Petain’s France. And the Immigration Minister also sent a press release congratulating the dishonored official (dishonored by my mom, not by his own acts), and it ended with this gem: «* The control of the migratory flows is at the heart of state sovereignty. This mission is noble, for there are no rights and duties without a Republic, and there is no Republic without borders. Our Republic must not let itself get humiliated by these qualified defamations, on top of grave offenses to the memory of deportation.* »

My own clumsy response can be found inside the link. I hope I get sued as well.

A shameless plug as we approach the anniversary of the Seattle WTO protests…

I designed a simulation in late 2007 and early 2008 of the Direct Action Network’s blockade of the Convention Center. It’s not the best agitprop, and it can’t cover the issues, but it may shed some light on the tactics and the course of events.

Yes, I was using a pen name at the time. It is kinda gamer-oriented and I am interested in ways to improve it and make it more accessible to non-gamers, more accurate and more persuasive.

Marja´s game is of masterful quality and truly does teach you something of the tactical politics of the establishment in the age of public relations. She´s also worked on a wargame simulation of the Ukranian Civil War; the maps she drew are of quality which should command the respect of any professional.

If anyone is looking for a brilliant game designer or knows anyone interested in game production who possesses complementary skills in marketing, please keep in mind that Marja has a deep reservoir of underused talent. Surely someone knows someone? Everyone reading this is a nerd, and anyone who call find contacts for Marja would be helping the movement as well as her. Political movements do not do well unless they serve their most basic functions as social networks and take care of their own when they deeply deserve it; And Marja is not only intelligent and well-read but she´s an extremely honest and loyal person who does not forget kindnesses. Talk to for an hour or two about a serious intellectual subject and you´ll see what I mean.
